Bhopal: The Raisen district in Madhya Pradesh saw another cow-related death within span of two days on Sunday evening. This time, a man was drowned while trying to save a cow in a swelling local stream. The cow was however saved.

The man, 40-year-old Raju Mongia, is survived by six children.

Two days ago, a truck driver died after jumping in Barna River in Sultanpur of same Raisen district after being attacked by a group of people over accidentally hitting three cows to death. His cleaner also jumped but survived.

According to police, a group of people had gathered on Sunday evening in Bamhori town of Silwani tehsil to try to save a cow that had fallen in the rapid flowing stream.

The group was trying to get a rope around the cow while standing on a culvert but failed repeatedly. Meanwhile, Raju, a local tea kiosk owner, jumped into the stream to help save the cow.

Sub-divisional officer of police (SDOP) of Silwani Dharmendra Singh Thakur said that Raju managed to put the rope around the cow’s neck, but in the process lost balance and was swept away by the raging water. Other people managed to pull out the cow.

Raju became invisible in the raging water before any attempt could be made to save him, the officer said. Later, divers searched for four hours before Raju’s body was found near a dam one kilometer downstream.

The police have registered a case of accidental death.
