BHOPAL: In an incident that shows the pathetic state of health facilities in Madhya Pradesh, a district collector’s mother dies for want of ambulance.

IAS officer Dr Shriniwas Sharma is posted as Collector at Damoh. His 76-year-old mother, Shanti Devi, had a heart attack.

As there was no Intensive Critical Care Unit [ICCU] facility in Damoh district hospital, she was referred to Jabalpur.

But, there was no ambulance available with the ventilator facility in the entire Damoh district. Sources said that there are two ambulances, but one was dysfunctional for six months, while other had gone for repair to Bhopal.

A basic ambulance was arranged from Sagar district after about two hours. By the time, she could reach Jabalpur, Shanti Devi succumbed on way.

The collector, Dr Shriniwas Sharma, said that the entire system is responsible. “Everyone including me as collector, is responsible. If the ambulance was available, my mother could have survived”, he told local media persons.
