Maoist attack in Chhattisgarh: Five security personnel killed in encounter, police say rebels also killed

RAIPUR: In yet another attack on security personnel, five jawans were killed and 12 personnel injured in Bijapur district in southern part of Chhattisgarh.

The police officials confirmed that the incident occurred at Tarrem in Bijapur on Saturday.

The personnel had gone to the spot on the basis of intelligence inputs about Maoist movement. But on their way back, they were suddenly attacked. At least, five troopers were killed in the firing. Meanwhile, state police claim that Maoists too were killed in the encounter.

Some jawans have been reportedly missing. Two helicopters have been sent to bring the mortal remains of the jawans. A high-level meeting was called in Raipur in wake of the second such incident in less than two weeks. Top leaders of the state have termed the attack as dastardly.

This is the second such attack on the security personnel in the recent past. Just a few days ago, five personnel were killed when DRG personnel travelling in a bus was targeted with IED. The bus had overturned and many victims were injured too. The incident hadoccurred on March 23, 2021. [Photo is for representative purpose]
