Muslim candidates have performed well in the elections in Canada that were held recently.
Though Muslims are the biggest religious minority in Canada after the Christians, the community's representation was not substantial till now.
But on this occasion, 13 Muslim MPs have been elected in the House of Commons that has a strength of 343 members.
Previous figures suggested that Canada had 4.9-5% Muslims. But on the basis of extrapoliation and statistical analyses, it is estimated that Canada has roughly 5.8-6% Muslims in 2025. The Sikhs number around 2.2%. Hindus also number around 2.4%. However, Sikhs have been a strong community in Canada, electorally.
There is growing number of MPs who have their ancestry and background in Punjab, a region that is now divided between India and Pakistan. Before partition, Punjab was a huge region and a major territory. However, after British left the sub-continent, Punjab got divided between the two countries.
Liberal party has managed to win election as Trump's recent outburst against Canada, seems to have created a wave of nationalism and the anger translated into the votes. As a result, the Liberal party that seemed weak just a few months ago, emerged successful.
After Justin Trudeau, Liberals seemed on the backfoot and lacking popular support. But, Trump's statements on tariff and the statements like Canada to be made the 51st state of United States of America, set the stage for the new Liberal party leader Mark Carney under whom the party emerged stronger.
Estimates of religious population in Canada
On the basis of 2021 figures, projections have been made and it is estimated that the country has a population of nearly 38.5 million. Muslims form 5.8-6% of population, Hindus are over 2.5%, Sikhs 2.4% and Jews 0.9%.
Among these, Christians account for nearly half the population. Besides, a large section of populace doesn't identify itself with any religion. Among the other faiths, Canada has nearly 2.24 million Muslims, 1 million Hindus and 950,000 Sikhs in the year 2025.
These are followed by Buddhists who number around 350,000. Jews are around 330,000-3,40,000. Though a huge nation, Canada has a population of just 38.5 million. Christians are the biggest community and their population is around 18.6-19 million.
