BHOPAL: In a major development, Nitin Mahindra, the main accused in Vyapam scam, got released from jail.

Mahindra, who is the alleged kingpin, has received bail in the cases registered against him.

After getting bail in the cases, he has come out of the Bhopal central jail on Friday.

Most of the main accused and prominent persons named in the FIRs registered in the Vyapam scam, have now been released from the jails--especially after the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) took over the probe in the multi-layered scam.

Mahindra, who was the principal system analyst with the Vyapam--the professional examination board (PEB), was in jail for over three years. He was in judicial custody after his arrest in connection with the scam.

In fact, it was Mahindra who was accused to be the kingpin as he headed the systems wing of the Vyapam, where OMR answer-sheets were tampered, so that candidates' numbers could be increased to help them crack the entrace examinations and recruitment tests.

Pankaj Trivedi, who was chairman of the board and also the controller of examination, is still in jail. However, most of the other accused are now out of the jail. Earlier, it was the Crime Branch which had begun investigation. Later, the special task force (STF) had conducted the probe.
