Bhopal: Under pouring rain on Thursday morning, the Bhopal Shahar Qazi called upon a huge Eid congregation to shun dowry and celebrate girl children.
Shahar Qazi Syed Mushtaq Ali Nadwi, while delivering the Eid sermons to the thousands of Muslim devouts at Eidgah, took a very strict stand against the social evil said that it was the responsibility of the man to take care of the woman he marries.
“Taking dowry is like begging that continues for the entire life after marriage. If one is man enough, he should bring the bride home without asking for any materialistic thing including cash as dowry,” the Qazi said.
The Qazi continued that if young men shun dowry strictly then within 15-20 years a revolution would take place and people would start celebrating births of daughters.
“Now when girls are born, people get worried. This is because during marriage there are unwarranted demands of dowry,” he said.
Giving an example, Nadwi said that he knows some people who took air conditioner as dowry during marriage and made their father-in-law pay the electricity bill too.
Despite heavy showers, thousands listened to the sermons of the Qazi on the open grounds and later offered the special Eid-ul-Fitr prayers.
Later, the devout were greeted on the Eidgah grounds by chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, BJP state president Nandkumar Singh Chouhan, Congress leader Suresh Pachouri and PC Sharma and others in a traditional manner.
The festival was celebrated with lot of enthusiasm with people visiting each other’s places to exchange greetings and enjoy traditional delicacies. Rain failed to dampen the spirit of the festival.
