Bhopal: Mastani Mahal, the palace in Chhatarpur, would soon regain its past glory.

The palace that was built as residence for Mastani, the daughter of Bundela ruler Chhatrasal, is all set to be conserved.

The Madhya Pradesh Tourism department has decided to take up the project and undertake restoration work on the palace, which is located in Dhubela. It was here that the the great warrior Bundela king Chhatrasal had set up his capital.

Mastani was Chhatrasal's daughter from his wife Roohani Bai. When Mohammad Khan Bangash had attacked Bundelkhand, the Bundelas had sought the help of Peshwa Baji Rao who had arrived with his army and had helped Chhatrasal save the kingdom.

Baji Rao had married Mastani. She had gone  along with him to Pune. Mastani's son Shamsher Bahadur who was born out of this wedlock, had later ruled the Banda state and his descendents had taken part in the 1857 war against British.

The saga of Baji Rao and Mastani is one of the most intriguing romances of Indian history.
