Man gets shot in police custody in Madhya Pradesh, dies, judicial probe ordered

BHOPAL: A man was allegedly killed in police custody in Satna district of Madhya Pradesh.

The victim--Rajpati Kushwaha, 36, was shot in the head, causing his death.

Angry residents took to the streets and demanded stern action against the policemen.

The incident occurred in Singhpur police station in Eastern part of the state, where the policemen were questioning Kushwaha who had been brought in connection with a theft case.

Apart from Kushwaha, two other persons were also being interrogated in the police station on Sunday night, when he got bullet injury and was rushed to hospital, where he was declared dead. Initially, policemen claimed that he shot himself, however, it was found that the bullet was fired from a distance of nearly 3 feet and it hit his forehead.

The officials earlier said that Kushwaha had tried to snatch the police station in-charge Vikram Pathak's gun and it went off. However, after the incident, local residents reached the police station and laid siege to it. The local residents alleged that the policemen were drunk and had shot Kushwaha, dead.

They demanded stern action. While two policemen were suspended, SP Riyaz Iqbal was also shifted. The State government has ordered a judicial probe to find out the circumstances that led to the killing, and has a financial assistance of Rs 10 lakh has been announced to the kin of the deceased.
