Bhopal: A day after the president of India approved the controversial NEET ordinance; a Madhya Pradesh activist has challenged the union government’s move in Supreme Court.

Activist Dr Anand Rai, who has been in the forefront of fighting corrupt activities in medical admissions in Madhya Pradesh and is one of the whistleblowers of the Vyapam Scam, filed the petition through his counsel Vivek Tankha.

Tankha who is ex-solicitor general of India, tweeted after filing the petition that he would press for an early hearing.

Petitioner Dr Rai, while talking to NewsBits.in said that the main ground to challenge the petition was that bringing the ordinance showed that ‘the intention of union government was not in public interest’.

Earlier this month, Supreme Court had ordered that the all admissions to medical and dental colleges in country would be conducted through the NEET (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test).

Dr Rai said that the reasons of language issues and disparity in school boards were flimsy as national tests like JEE (main and advanced) where all India students appeared were also held in English and did nt ohave any regional language options.

He is of view that NEET for medical exam is one good way to arrest the rampant corruption in medical admissions. “It is surprising that when the Supreme Court came out with an order after much deliberation, the union government is seeking to override it,” the activist said.

Through the ordinance, the union government had allowed the admissions to government medical colleges to be exempt from NEET for duration of one year. The national test would however be binding on private colleges.
