VISAKAHAPATNAM: In a blood-curdling incident, a youth slit the throat of a teenaged girl on the street.

The victim--Varalakshmi, 17, was attacked and killed on the spot.

The incident that sent shockwaves in the region, occurred in Gajuwaka, Vishakhapatnam (Vizag city) in Andhra.

Initial probe reveals that the youth attacked her after an argument with him. He had intercepted her on the road and then attacked her with a sharp-edged weapon. The investigation suggests that the killer--Akhil Sai, 22, was in 'love' with her but was suspicious and felt that she was friendly with another youth.

Varalakshmi was busy due to a marriage in her family over the last couple of days. On Saturday, she went missing and the kin thought she might have gone to the relative's house. However, she was found murdered. The body was lying near a temple and her throat was cut.

After the incident, Chief Minister Jagan Reddy directed the officials to take stern action against the perpetrators of the heinous crime. Also, he announced a financial assistance to the family. The officials later said that the killer has been taken into custody and has been formally arrested for the murder.
