CHITTOOR: The parents who allegedly killed their own daughters in Madanapalle town in Chittoor district, have been arrested.

The couple--Purushotham Naidu and his wife, Padmaja, who planned the murders, are highly religious and superstitious, said police.

After the arrest, they were in a state of trance and kept insisting that the daughters would again be alive, soon.

According to police, Alekhya, 27, and her younger sister Sai Divya, 22, were killed after elaborate rituals and prayers. There was blood on the floor. They had attacked the daughters with trishul [trident] and dumb bell, after putting copper cups in the mouth.

The girls' mother, Padmaja was singing and dancing even in the custody. She claimed that Coronavirus didn't originate from Wuhan (China) and that Kali Yuga was ending and Sat Yuga would start from Monday, when her daughters would be revived again. She repeatedly said that she was 'Shiva' and Corona would end by March.

Local residents said that the family was highly religious and superstitious. The girls had circumambulated around the house earlier. While Naidu holds a doctorate in Chemistry and is vice-principal with a college, his wife was a gold medallist in mathematics and post-graduate, working in an IIT coaching institute.

The girls were dressed in red saris. One of the daughters' social media posts reveal hate towards other religion too. Further, investigation is on in the case. The Madanapalle police have booked them for murder. The couple has now been arrested, presented in the court and subsequently sent to judicial custody.
