Bhopal: Disciplinary action has been initiated against a police constable from Burhanpur district who had written to chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan seeking salary hike.

The constable – Suraj Singh Chundawat – who originally hails from Neemuch district has been attached to police lines, meaning he is off field duty and faces cuts in monthly emoluments.

It is his poor monthly salary that made him write to CM Chouhan at the first place. In a letter to the CM, Chundawat had said that he got merely Rs 16,500 as monthly salary and after fixed expenditure like rent, fuel, food etc, he could save merely Rs 5000-6000 per month, which was insufficient to run his family.

After his action came to light, the police constable was attached to police lines. Home minister Babulal Gaur told a section of media that the disciplinary action was taken against the constable under provisions of Police Act.

Many policemen have expressed fears that Chundawat may face even tough action. On social media, they have expressed apprehensions in this regard.

Police being a disciplined force has tough measures in place for 'in-subordination' or 'indiscipline', which could even lead to dismissal.

The action is sterner than in other government departments. A section of policemen had posted black logos in their social media (whatsapp) account as a mark of protest against their fellow cop.

On social media viz. Facebook also policemen of lower rank have expressed their solidarity towards the policeman.
