Bhopal: Agitated at lack of facilities, a section of students of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Bhopal threw ink on union health minister JP Nadda during his visit to the institute campus on Saturday.

In the rumpus, the driver of the minister’s official car suddenly accelerated the vehicle, trampling upon feet of two demonstrating girl students. The students have been identified as Anjali Krishna and Lizza Pandey. They were immediately taken to the hospital for treatment.

About 50 students were demonstrating during Nadda’s visit. They were trying to block the minister’s car from leaving but as they found the minister not stopping, someone sprinkled ink at him. This smeared the minister’s white kurta.

The driver then tried to take ahead the vehicle, accidentally trampling the girl students.

The minister later promised that all the issues of the students would be resolved soon. He said he did not know about the past, but he would take serious steps.

Lack of infrastructure, faculty, training opportunities

Students in AIIMS have been demanding upgrading of facilities and filling up of vacant posts of faculty members including the director from a long time. The laboratories are not upgraded and departments do not run full-fledged keeping them deprived of practical training.

They have said that many union ministers have visited the institute and promised early relief but nothing has been done.

The first batch of MBBS is about to pass out, but they are yet to be trained in gynaecology surgery (childbirth) procedures as not a single delivery has been conducted here, the students said.

In anticipation of the minister’s visit, the road in the campus was reportedly repaired within a day and a delivery ward set up in gynaecology department overnight.
