BHOPAL: It took 12 phone calls but ambulance didn't reach the Berasia Road residence in Bhopal.

Laxmi Lodhi was pregnant and suddenly her condition worsened. There was no vehicle in the house to take her to he hospital.

Her husband Dharmendra Lodhi somehow took his wife on foot to 1-1/2 km. She was in extreme pain and fell on the road.

It was finally on the road that she gave birth to a baby with the help of a woman on the street. This incident shows the condition of health services in Bhopal, the capital of Madhya Pradesh.

The emergency ambulance system [108 scheme] that also serves as Janani Express has a response time of 20 minutes. But in this case ambulance didn't reach the patient's home at all. As a result, the woman and her kid's life was put to risk.

The Madhya Pradesh Human Rights Commission (MPHRC) has taken congisnace of the incident and has issued notices to Principal Secretary (Health), Director of National Health Mission and the Chief Medical and Health Officer (CMHO), Bhopal.

A week time has been given to the officials to submit the explanation. The commission has sought explanation from all of them as to how the situation reached such a nadir that the medical service that is meant for patients, especially, pregnant women couldn't provide succour when it was needed the most.
