NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Friday directed the Centre to balance public safety with the daily mobility needs of general commuters and not to completely halt metro and train service in Delhi ahead of the October 10 protest called by Cockroach Janta Party (CJP).
An SC bench led by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant and Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V Mohana, said that law enforcement cannot "use a sledgehammer to kill a fly".
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta assured the top court that the centre would reconsider the restrictions, following which the court mandated that authorities allow metro and train services in a suitably regulated manner rather than a total prohibition.
The apex court also instructed the administration to give wide publicity regarding any adjusted or regulated transport schedules so that ordinary citizens were not confused and inconvenienced.
