Real sportsman: Ex-state level player sacrifices life to save a girl in MP

Bhopal: Even as the country is going ga ga over the recent Olympic medals, another real sportsman quietly sacrificed his life to save a girl child.

Babloo Martin, a state level cricket and football player from Maihar of Satna district in Madhya Pradesh succumbed to the injuries that he sustained while attempting to save a 12-year-old girl from coming under a collapsing building on Saturday.

Babloo, 42, was a well known figure in the religious town and would coach youngsters in both the sports.

According to eye witnesses, the sportsman was standing near the ill-fated building when it started to collapse and saw Prabha, 12, daughter of local watchman about to be trapped.

He rushed to push Prabha aside was caught under the debris of the three-storey building that collapsed completely in a flash.

He was brought out of the debris after a hour long rescue operation, but he had sustained grievous injuries and was referred to Katni. He however succumbed on the way to the hospital. A pall of gloom has descended over the town after news of his death spread.

Another 70-year-old woman was also killed in the accident that occurred due to heavy rainfall in the district. Six people were rescued and four of them sustained injuries.

According to sources, the building constructed by MP Housing Board, though fairly newly constructed, had been declared dilapidated and dangerous by local civic body a year ago. Yet families were illegally staying in the apartments.

The state government has instituted an inquiry into the reasons of the collapse. The inquiry would be conducted by chief engineer of the PWD department Vijay Verma.
